Photographer Roger Hoover

Roger Hoover is a Storyteller.

My mission in life has always been in sharing stories - my history, and the stories of those around me. My passion for photographing honest, engaging moments allows me to capture the essence of my subjects and document the minutiae of their story. With camera in hand, I photograph landscapes, people, and brands, documenting stories, events, communities and families. I'd love to work with you.

There are stories everywhere and I want to be out there documenting them all.

I take a documentary approach to making photographs. I work equally hard on commercial projects as I do on personal projects.

A camera is a medium that helps us share stories. There are stories in kitchens, where chefs toil away to provide meals that are consumed in minutes. There are stories in bars where someone is crafting a gorgeous cocktail, or a townie bar where men congregate after a shift at the factory. There are stories where land is eroding, rivers are adapting, and mountains are crumbling. There are stories in backyards where children are climbing trees, building forts, and getting muddy (as kids should!). To me, they're all the same. Its my job to find the perspective.

I'm father to two daughters, husband to Ysabel, Creative Director of Rust Creative and a songwriter.

I've always been a creative. In high school I was mentored by teacher Ron White in painting and sculpture, James Passarelli in photography, and by my father, Roger Hoover, in printmaking and graphic design.  I went on to study Fine Art at Kent State. I used my knowledge of art to work on grassroots campaigns for musicians, artists, and, later, as a Creative Director for various design/advertising agencies.

I fell in love with making photographs while on a trip with my father-in-law and uncle-in-law, Robert and Mike, through remote areas of Southern Utah and Northern Arizona. It was a rare trip, one that may never happen again, so I purchased a Fuji X100s rangefinder camera and documented all we discovered.

Photography is not a difficult medium to learn. Anybody can snap a photo. What makes me different is a profound capacity to find emotion, to discover the story, and to put myself in position to anticipate the best shot. In terms of photographing brands and businesses, I am able to process photographs that capture the essence of your brand.

I'm available for both commercial and personal photoshoots. To inquire, please send a brief summary about your project to and I'll respond shortly.

"Roger has been an invaluable partner to my businesses. He provides valuable perspective and stays current on market trends so we don’t have to keep as close an eye. And he has given our brands the distinct voice and image we were seeking." Mike Beder, Entrepreneur

"Roger was a professional and did a great job covering a community event. He was open to feedback on what areas to cover and themes to capture. The photos were high quality and made available shortly after the event. Overall I was very happy with his service!" - Harrison Wicks, Assistant to City Manager of Kent

"Roger has photographed several Main Street Kent events, both indoors and out, and he does a stellar job! We’re grateful for Roger’s quality work and personable approach." - Heather Malarcik, Executive Director, Main Street Kent

"Roger has been a pleasure to work with. His eye for composition and creativity has brought our coffee and pastries to life! In addition, his candid shots of both employees and customers, have been perfect for our social media needs." - Lauren Heroux, Tree City Coffee & Pastry

"I can not recommend Roger enough!!! He was just the person I needed for my business. I knew I found the perfect match when the 1st question he asked was a detail about my business, and not how many photos I needs for my website. He knows the ins and outs of branding and marketing a small business, he isn’t just a photographer, and loves to help you figure out your gameplan. He is always warm and welcoming, and makes you feel like a life long friend. Roger takes the time to get to know his costumers and has an amazing eye for photography. With great attention to detail, he is able to capture those special moments that add your personality to your brand, so customers can truly see the real you. I could not be happier. Again, I can not recommend him enough!" - Jacki Kuehne, Stylist at Lucertola's Salon of Hudson
